If you only want to take pictures of family, friends, pets and holidays then all you actually need is to look for cameras that are convenient to carry around without having to lug all the extra equipment. In this case it makes sense to have a small contract camera that you can carry with you everywhere rather than a larger camera that you can not carry around with you all the time. contract cameras do vary in size - some have lenses that stick out, whereas others are level, which makes the whole camera a lot slimmer.
Bridge, Or Superzoom Cameras
The disadvantage of contract cameras is that they can be a bit fiddly at times as all things is so small. Possibly you want a camera that you can hold with two hands, and that has a good grip. Maybe you'd like a bigger zoom too. Possibly you find it hard to use an Lcd screen, and need a viewfinder. If so, a bridge camera could be what you need as these highlight large zooms and electronic viewfinders, similar to camcorders.
